Sunday 08/14/2005 Cahersiveen, IR Day 3662 (Ireland Trip, Day 6, Part 12)

What Happened Today?

DAY 6: GLENBEIGH TO CAHERSIVEEN (DERRYMORE VALLEY)

HIKING INSTRUCTIONS

KERRY WAYMARKED ROUTE AT ROSBEIGH

Turn left there at Foilmore—it is not very clear but the path goes down the side of a house. It is marked. The path to the river is a bit overgrown.

Continue until you meet the river.

Cross the first wooden bridge, through a field and then cross a metal bridge onto a minor road.

Turn right for 400m through Gortmore until you pass the football field, turn right and continue along the line of the ditch to the next stile.

Cross the last stile and turn left onto a farm lane for 50m, then around to the right for 100m as marked. The Kerry Way turns left at Teeraha towards Waterville; straight on takes you into Cahersiveen.

If you have arranged a pick-up with Failte Guesthouse it will be at the Srugreana Crossroads so follow the Way towards Cahersiveen for another 1.7km to GR 522803.

Sunday 08/14/2005 Cahersiveen, IR Day 3662 (Ireland Trip, Day 6, Part 5)

What Happened Today?

DAY 6: GLENBEIGH TO CAHERSIVEEN (DERRYMORE VALLEY)

We had a rough ride due to 3-4 feet sea waves all the way to the destination. The boat ride took about 60 minutes. We passed smaller islands with thousands of birds. The rocks were coated in white bird poop.

We arrived at the main island around 11:30 AM and were told the boat would leave in 2 hours.

A trail led up the side of the island to an area where stone steps led to the top of the island.

Kay decided not to walk up the steps. It took me 30 minutes to get to the top… difficult hike! But worth it!

I saw several “beehives” built by monks over 1000 years ago. I listened to my Gaia tape as I walked around the various beehive buildings which housed the monks. I feel a connection here which I can’t explain. It could be the setting and old age of the place. Amazing feeling on belonging due to an old ancestor from this place? I don’t know.

Just beyond this location is a grassy area that Luke Skywalker appeared in a Star Wars movie.
