DAY 6: GLENBEIGH TO CAHERSIVEEN (DERRYMORE VALLEY)

Free day! No hiking today. Up at 7:30 AM.

We enjoyed another traditional Irish breakfast around 8:00 AM. We sat at a table with 2 people from the Netherlands. They were a day ahead of us.

Catherine said we were very lucky due to a cancellation (Gaia’s influence?) and we could go on the boat to Skellig Island.

Catherine drove us to Menard Point to board the Sea Quest. It was a smaller boat than I expected. The Sea Quest left the dock with just us and then went to another location to pick up 10 people. Only 12 people allowed on the boat.

What Happened Today?

DAY 5: GLENBEIGH TO CAHERSIVEEN (DERRYMORE VALLEY)

Cool and rainy this morning.

Kay’s 57th birthday.

We woke up around 8:00 AM and actually got up around 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM breakfast. A group of hikers were ahead of us and completely filled up the dining room until 9:30 AM.

I gave Kay a birthday card.

We enjoyed another traditional Irish breakfast and waited until 12:00 PM for a taxi to Derrymore which cost 45 Euros.

What Happened Today?

DAY 4: GLENCAR TO GLENBEIGH

HIKING INSTRUCTIONS Part 2

From Licken Wood, turn left on the road for 2km towards Caragh Lake, crossing the Meelagh river on a lovely stone and iron bridge, crossing another stream and just before Bunglash National School, you turn left on a small road.

Head up this track past the woods, ignoring any sidetracks. There are spectacular views behind you of Carruntohill, Beenkeeragh and a vista of the Reeks.

The road bears right: stay on it until you reach the markers, and a gravel road that runs around Seefin mountain to the northeast.

At Gortdirragh, go through the gate to the left and head up the grassy track to the Windy Gap. This will bring you out onto a marvelous viewing point overlooking the village of Glenbeigh and Dingle Bay.

Head down until you meet a surfaced road and turn right for the village.

The B&B was Oaktree Lodge. Host was Mildred Houlihan.

Friday 08/12/2005 Glencar, IR Day 3660 (Ireland Trip, Day 4, Part 1)

What Happened Today?

DAY 4: GLENCAR TO GLENBEIGH

Up at 7:15 AM. Breakfast at 8:00 AM. Usual irish breakfast of 1 egg, 2 bacon strips, 2 sausages, orange juice, toast, coffee, cereal and fruit.

Paid 40 Euros for our dinner last night. They gave us a shorter way to start the hike. As we walked along the road, I still marveled at the various shades of green. We even saw green-pained barb wire on top of a fence.

A little further on we saw a farmer leading a herd of cows… maybe 25 or 30 cows. At an intersection near a house, we picked up a temporary traveling companion… a dog named Sammy.

We climbed up a long road and walked the long way around a mountain into Glenbeigh. Beautiful scenery of mountains and lakes. As we walked around the mountain, we saw several unhappy sheep being herded up the mountainside.
