What Happened Today? Feather Sound walk with Kay. Worked at home. Working on B&H product line. Met with Clifford and Matt. Later that evening I listened to Irish music.

GAIA- Planetary Management:

246. Between 1945 and 1975, about 30 million ha of land in the US were lost under concrete and asphalt, half of this being arable land.

247. South America: The major limiting factor is mineral stress (47%), the areas affected generally being vast tracts of forest.

248. Tropical forest soils are typically low in nutrients.

249. Less than half of the fertile soil is used for crops.

250. How Much Land Could We Cultivate? We cultivate only 11% of the Earth’s surface, and yet some experts believe that as much as 24% could be used for crops.

What Happened Today? Feather Sound walk with Kay. Drove to the Tampa office. Working on B&H product line. Tampa Bay Devil Rays lost to the New York Yankees.

GAIA- Planetary Management:

241. As much as 28% of the world’s land surface suffers from drought (not so surprising, when you consider that the Sahara occupies nearly a billion hectares).

242. Mineral-stressed soils account for a further 23%.

243. Soils that are too thin to be much use cover 22%, while waterlogged soils account for 10%.

244. Permafrost soils (ground that is permanently frozen) cover 6%– and these do not include Antarctica or Greenland.

245. North and Central America: Soil suited to growing crops accounts for 22% of the land, and yet only 13% is actually used as cropland.

What Happened Today? Feather Sound walk with Kay. We left for an FPCA Meeting in Long Boat Key, Sarasota. Arrived around 11;30 AM. Attended Paint Council, PAC and Board Meeting. Dinner with Mike and Lori.

216. Many non-indigenous people do not understand because of their greed they have lost contact with their spirituality and the spirit of the land.

218. THE LAND POTENTIAL: Marvelous stuff, soil.

219. Sterile and boring as it may appear, often mucky too, this thin layer covering the planet’s land surface is the biosphere’s foundation, our primary resource.

220. Soil is as lively as an army of migrating wildebeest and as fascinating, even beautiful, as a flock of flamingoes.

What Happened Today? No walk. Left for Tampa office early to prepare for DuPont meeting. Good session but no commitment. Our vacation was cancelled due to storm damage. We changed our location to Lake Lure in November.

Gaia- Planetary Management: 

211. I have been to the USA, England, and Italy, and everywhere I went I was surrounded by big buildings.

212. As I looked at the people, I saw them walking around, really sad, not knowing where to go.

213. I came to the conclusion that these people have lost contact with nature.

214. As I look at the people, the places, and the countries where I go, I see that, economically speaking, they are very powerful, and in a material way have everything they need.

215. My people do not have the technology, the money, the buildings– but we do have our forests and we are happier.

What Happened Today? 1/2 walk. Raining! One year since attack in New York City. No new attacks though everyone expected something. Tampa Bay Devil Rays lose to the Boston Red sox. Preparing for the DuPont meeting.

GAIA- Planetary Management:

206. Not many forest people can get to the Research Center, so it is moving to them.

207. Part of the Center is moving into the forest to meet the needs of indigenous people and rubber tappers.

208. Non-indigenous people do not really understand our needs.

209. They are only concerned about their own needs.

210. I think these people have somehow lost their spiritual touch.
