DAY 9: WATERVILLE TO CATHERDANIEL
HIKING INSTRUCTIONS (Part 3)
Keep following the main road and head down towards the Scarriff Inn where you can enjoy a rest. Pass the Inn and take the first right. Keep on down this road until you come to the second sharp bend where you see a sign “cul-de-sac”. The route is different here from the map.
Instead of crossing open country at GR515602, Farranlaragh, you now follow the minor road for 1.6km to join a grey road at GR515600. Here turn into an avenue and keep on this for 700m.
Where you see telephone poles heading up the hill on the left, you turn onto a very narrow track through bushes. Head uphill and you meet a fence. The track opens on a rocky, grass-covered terrain. Cross the fence and stick to the path for about 200m, before turning right finding a stone wall which was the boundary of the old Daniel O’Connell estate.
Follow this wall to the left and you meet a stile at the surfaced road. There is a sign here for Derrynane Historical Park. Turn right here downhill.
